  • The Olde English Bulldogge is a robust and athletic dog breed that embodies the look of the original bull-baiting dogs of the 17th and 18th centuries while boasting a more balanced and healthier build. Developed in the 1970s by David Leavitt in the United States, the Olde English Bulldogge was bred to recreate the healthier and more agile characteristics of the early bulldog. This was achieved by crossing English Bulldogs, American Bulldogs, Bullmastiffs, and American Pit Bull Terriers.

Physically, the Olde English Bulldogge is a medium to large-sized dog, standing between 16 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing between 50 to 80 pounds. They have a muscular and athletic build, characterized by a broad chest, sturdy legs, and a strong, square jaw. Their coat is short, smooth, and comes in a variety of colors, including brindle, fawn, white, black, and combinations thereof. One of the breed's most distinctive features is its prominent and expressive face, which is less wrinkled and has a longer muzzle compared to the modern English Bulldog, reducing the risk of breathing issues.

In terms of temperament, the Olde English Bulldogge is known for its loyalty, confidence, and protective nature. They are courageous and determined, making excellent watchdogs. Despite their tough appearance, they are gentle and affectionate with their families, forming strong bonds and enjoying being part of household activities. They are known for their stable and trustworthy nature, making them good companions for children.

Olde English Bulldogges require regular exercise to keep them fit and healthy. Daily walks, play sessions, and opportunities to engage in physical activities are essential to meet their energy needs. They thrive in environments where they receive ample attention and interaction with their human companions.

Health-wise, the Olde English Bulldogge is generally healthier than its modern English Bulldog counterpart, thanks to its carefully planned breeding. However, they can still be prone to certain conditions such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and certain skin issues. Regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced diet, and appropriate exercise are crucial for maintaining their health. Their short coat requires minimal grooming, with regular brushing to remove loose hair and occasional baths to keep them clean.

The Olde English Bulldogge is a loyal and courageous breed known for its athletic build and affectionate nature. With proper care, training, and socialization, they make excellent companions for families and individuals who appreciate their protective instincts and gentle demeanor. Their combination of strength, health, and loyalty makes them a cherished breed among dog enthusiasts.
