The Shar Pei, an ancient breed originating from China, is renowned for its unique appearance and loyal nature. Known for their deeply wrinkled skin, "hippopotamus" face, and blue-black tongue, Shar Peis have a distinctive look that sets them apart from other breeds. Historically, they were used as multipurpose farm dogs, hunters, and protectors in Chinese villages.
Physically, Shar Peis are medium-sized dogs, typically weighing between 45 to 60 pounds. Their most striking feature is their loose, wrinkled skin, which is most prominent in puppies and tends to smooth out as they mature. They have small, almond-shaped eyes, giving them a somewhat serious and dignified expression. Their coat can be one of three types: horse, brush, and bear coat, with the horse coat being the shortest and most common. Coat colors include solid shades like black, red, fawn, cream, and blue.
Shar Peis are known for their loyalty and protective nature, forming strong bonds with their families. They are reserved and cautious around strangers, making them excellent watchdogs.
