Originally bred in Southern Africa to hunt lions, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a majestic and versatile breed with a rich history and remarkable traits. Named for the distinctive ridge of hair along its back, this breed embodies strength, loyalty, and elegance.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback's origins trace back to the indigenous Khoikhoi and Hottentot tribes of Southern Africa, who developed a breed known as the African Lion Hound. European settlers later crossed these dogs with European breeds like Great Danes, Mastiffs, and Greyhounds to create the Rhodesian Ridgeback we know today. The breed was refined further in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), where it gained its lion-hunting reputation.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large and muscular dog, standing 24-27 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing between 70-85 pounds. Its most distinctive feature is the ridge of hair along its back, formed by the hair growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat. This ridge is a hallmark of the breed and should be clearly defined. The breed's coat is short and sleek, coming in various shades of wheaten.
Known for its gentle and affectionate nature, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is also fiercely loyal and protective of its family.
